We Had Our Share of Wars...

Looking back…just a Boomer moment in time…
And, oh we were so cool...

“Wars,” we’ve had our share of wars. We grew up with stories of WWII. We saw remnants of war, uniforms, medals, photos, and a few remaining Quonset huts.
We saw newsreels of the Korean War and heard stories from Uncles who were called up to serve in that war.
The Cold War was our generation’s war. It was a time of Air Raid Shelters, stock piling food and water, Air Raid Drills, fear of a nuclear attack, and fear of another world war more deadly than the last. But Boomers lived through it and learned.
We lived through the Kennedy Camelot years, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the assassination of our beloved President Kennedy, the assassination of Martin Luther King, and the assassination of Robert Kennedy. These are sad memories, and sad times in the history of our country. But Boomers lived through it and we learned.
The military draft was a way of life for our boys. The military draft took our boyfriends and made them into men.
The Vietnam War was our generation’s war too. It was an extremely
unpopular war that divided our country and brought protests to our college campuses. But again Boomers lived through it and we learned.
The end of the Cold War and the tearing down of the Berlin Wall, we never thought we would live to see that. But Boomers did live to see it and again we learned from it.
Suddenly we found our military involved in hot spots that developed throughout the world. We didn’t call them wars, they were conflicts and we sent in men to act as peacekeepers. We were becoming the Policemen of the world. Boomers lived through those conflicts and we learned.
Desert Storm, most of us were too old now to serve our country, this made us feel helpless. This was our children’s war. War was different this time, there were technological advances that the United States of America possessed, casualties were kept to a minimum, it was a different kind of war. But there was germ warfare. Who would have thought we would have lived to see a threat of germ warfare. But Boomers lived through it fearing for their children who were put in harm’s way. We lived through it and we learned. Fear once again was our everyday companion.
Then, September 11th, 2001 the unthinkable happened. War was brought here to our land, our land, the land of the free and the home of the brave. Our country reeled from the terror and destruction. We cried out, “Not here, not in the United States!” We live in fear. We live in fear for our children and our grandchildren. We live in fear for our country. But we are united in our fear. Boomers once again learned and we are still learning.
Now there is a new war, the War on Terrorism. And, this time it is everyone’s war. We are the country’s intelligence system. We are on high alert. This war is on our land. This war threatens all of us every day. Boomers again are living through another war. A war on our own
Soil. Something we thought we would never see and we are learning.
United we stand, young and old, black and white, Christian and Muslim…Wars, we’ve had our share of wars. But Boomers lived through it and we are still learning...and we pray for peace...

Looking back…just a Boomer moment in time…
And, oh we were so cool...
